A “Hands on” review of the Ryobi One+ 4-PC Lithium Power Tool Kit has been posted over at the Toolmonger. ‘The darling of the set is the 18V 1/2″ 2-speed drill/driver. It feels light and comfortable, yet includes all the bells and whistles we’d expect on cordless rigs, such as two-speeds (high/low), a brake, a half-inch keyless chuck (which is plastic but still worked well), a multi-setting clutch, and direction reversal. But what about that 330 in-lbs rating? Since manufacturers don’t provide the RPM at which they take these ratings, they’re essentially meaningless. Sometimes manufacturers fudge ‘em up a bit, selecting a slower speed to make a wimpy driver sound like a brute. Is this the case with the Ryobi?’

Auto Express have published their review of seven cordless drills. 'Until recently, cordless drills have lagged behind mains versions in two areas: torque and maximum speed under load. To test low-down grunt, each tool had to drive a screw into a series of ever-smaller holes in a steel plate until it could turn no more. For the speed test, we attached a polishing pad and used the drills on an old scrap panel, deliberately pressing hard to see how they coped. We also tested battery life, while features such as multi speeds, a hammer action, spare batteries, a fast charger, decent cases and a large chuck earned extra points.

A review of the Black & Decker VPX Starter Set has been posted over at 14U News. 'The Black & Decker VPX Starter Set includes a screwdriver, cutsaw and flashlight that all use one VPX battery pack. The VPX battery pack and the battery pack charger are included as well. There are several other tool sin the VPX collection and some require two VPX battery packs to operate. To keep from taking up all the AC outlets with chargers, the VPX charger features a daisy chain port that allows you to charge multiple VPX battery packs from one AC outlet. The VPX1101X screwdriver that is included with the kit has a two-speed transmission with a 195 rpm speed for screws and a 625 rpm speed for drilling. The VPX1301X cutsaw has a ½-inch stroke length and runs at 1950 stroke/min. The final tool in the collection is the VPX1401 is a three LED flashlight that can run for up to five hours on a single VPX battery pack. The VPX battery pack itself is a 7V lithium-ion battery designed to hold a charge for an extended period so it is ready to work when you are.'

A review of the Rigid MaxSelect Reciprocating Saw has been posted over at Toolmonger. 'Looking at the box the recip saw comes in, you might think that Ridgid likes to cut corners. They do, but not the way you’re thinking. Some of the corners look like they’re dented in, but really they’re just folded funny. The result: a stylish box with nice, compact dimensions that does a really good job of keeping everything inside nice and snug with nothing rattling around. As part of the MaxSelect “system,” the recip saw doesn’t ship with batteries or a charger. You’ll have to buy them separately. If that sounds strange, consider that virtually no one is going to buy a pro-line tool like this without owning a drill (and possibly other tools) as well. Ridgid’s MaxSelect drills do ship with multiple batteries and a charger, so this starts to make sense.'

Popular Mechanics have tested the Coleman 5.4V Cordless FlashCell screwdriver in a review of the tool which is capable of a recharge in ninety seconds. ‘According to Team Products International, the company behind the FlashCell, it runs for about half as long as an equivalent tool, such as Skil's lithium-ion-powered 3.6V iXO cordless screwdriver. Specifically, that means around 22 screws per charge, compared to 37 for the iXO. The company also estimates that the capacitor can handle over 500,000 full-charge cycles. And since there's no memory effect, you don't even have to wait the full 90 seconds before getting back to work. You can snap it into place (a satisfying, spring-loaded operation, by the way—reminiscent of old Fisher-Price toys), then watch the gloriously analog needle in the power gauge swing upward for, say, 45 seconds.’
